Melissa Bean for Congress

Automated and Live ID Calls

The Problem

Melissa Bean was running for the House of Representatives in the heavily Republican 8th District of Illinois. This suburban Chicago seat was held by 35 year veteran Phil Crane, the longest standing Republican member in the House. Polling commissioned by Bean's campaign found that voters were uncertain of Crane's ability to represent the district and many voters were undecided on their choice for Congress. But polling did not indicate exactly who these undecided voters were. Melissa Bean needed a way to pinpoint these undecided voters and effectively deliver her message to them.

The Stones' Phones Solution

We designed a live ID program designed to find these undecided voters in the district. The voters were asked to gauge their feeling about the Congressional race. They were asked if they supported Phil Crane, if they would consider voting against him, if they would definitely vote against Phil Crane, or if they were undecided. With this ID call we identified 78,000 members of the Illinois 8th that were either open to voting for someone other than Phil Crane or knew they definitely wanted to replace Phil Crane. This group of identified voters was a valuable asset throughout the campaign and a perfect target for persuasion through multiple media.

The Result

Melissa Bean successfully beat the longest standing Republican Congressman in a historically Republican district. The Bean campaign effectively used these identified undecided voters and communicated Mellisa's message of real change for a district that had been too long neglected by their former representative.
